Body tissue holds trauma – not just physical injury, but also emotional and mental trauma. By gently releasing tension, and soothing away muscular aches and pains, our massage therapists can also help you to release your past, and move forward.

“The body stores all of our memories, and it’s tied to the limbic system in the brain where emotions are stored,” said Diane Fisher, a Licensed Massage Therapist who has taught massage for more than eight years. “We’re physically manipulating the tissue and that’s what causes the release.”

With over 2000 types of massages available, it’s important to know which type is right for you. Here’s an overview of the most popular forms of massage, and what they can do:

Swedish Massage: Known for long, flowing strokes that help to improve the circulation, which in turn helps the whole body system. People often think of it as relaxation massage, but it also can be therapeutic.

Deep Tissue Massage: Our therapist contacts the muscles and works them effectively to release tension and trauma.

Pregnancy Massage: Pillows prop up the woman, who is most likely going to be lying on her side. The pressure is kept light, while gearing toward relaxation and relief of low back and leg pain.

Sports Massage: This type of massage varies depending on the athlete’s stage of training. The athlete needs to discuss whether they’re getting ready for a competition, in between competitions, or fresh from an event. For each stage the approach will differ.

Cranial Sacral: Although this is a very light-touch work centered on the skull and the sacrum, it also reaches deep into the body’s memories. It’s particularly useful for head injuries or whiplash.
