He graduated in 1978 from Pune, India, MBBS (Masters in General Surgery) and was a practicing surgeon from 1982-1990. Dr. Merchant joined Brookdale Hospital, New York in 1993 where he completed his pediatric residency. Here, he was selected Outstanding PLI Resident and named Chief Resident.

After moving to Orlando, Florida, Dr. Merchant opened his private practice in 1998, providing full-service care for patients from newborns to 18 years of age.
