What is Keratin?

Keratin therapy is a smoothing therapy provided in-salon to restore and restructure the hair by infusing a special blend of hydrolyzed keratin deep into the cuticle. The keratin is adhered to the cuticle with a flat iron to relax the hair strands at the sub-cuticle layer. Keratin is a type of protein high in the amino acid “cystine” this special amino acid is what makes hair super tough and extremely elastic. Keratin treatment are not relaxers but a smoothing treatment. Keratin treatments provides smoothness and shine of hair and your hair will be more manageable, easy to style and more resistant to humidity.

Why should you do a Keratin treatment?

Women have become very addicted to flat ironing their hair in order to achieve smooth hair. They are not realizing the damage it does to their hair. Flat iron damages the hair more severely than even chemical services. Think of baking a cake at 350 degrees would you stick your head in an oven? With a Keratin treatment you will eliminate the need to flat iron and prevent thermal damage. If you have coarse and curly hair the Keratin will make it manageable and cut down on blow drying time and eliminate frizz.

What is involved in Keratin treatments?

Keratin treatments can take anywhere to 2 to 4 hours depending on length and thickness of hair. The process involves shampooing with a clarifying shampoo and then blow dried. The treatment is then applied section by section and combed through the hair followed by blow dry and flat iron. This will seal in the treatment.

What are my responsibilities for after care?

It is the after care of your keratin treatment that is crucial to ensuring its effectiveness. You must wait 72 hours before you can shampoo your hair and it must remain straight and dry at all times. This means you cannot wear hair barrettes, head bands, hats or tuck your hair behind your ears. In other words, you cannot “bend” your hair for 72 hours. It is important to use sulphate- free shampoo to avoid stripping the keratin from your hair.

When can I color my hair?

Color treatments can be done prior to a keratin treatment which will seal in the color. In fact, a keratin treatment can repair any potential damage done after chemically treated or relaxed hair.
