Take the Stress Out of Hair Color

Coloring your hair for the first time is a big decision. The questions can be really stressful. Should I? Will it suit me? Will I suffer from some nasty chemical reaction? What if it damages my hair? Will my hair start falling out? What if the color goes all wrong? Can it be rectified? Can I afford it? Will I be able to manage it? Should I try it myself at home or visit a professional?

The first step before coloring your hair

Book a consultation with a specialist. It’s always better to let a professional handle your hair color, especially the first time. Consultations take 15-30 minutes and are usually free.

The colorist will study your hair thickness and texture, discuss your expectations and give you aclear idea of what’s possible and how much it will cost.

At the consult, be sure to carry pictures of what you want and what you don’t. This will help your colorist understand the exact shade you want. Also, discuss how often you are willing to color your hair. If you don’t want to come in for root touch-upsevery month, let your colorist know. Many hair colors require regular and meticulous care. For example,if you go platinum or get a fantasy/fashion color, you will need to get the roots done every 4-6 weeks which can be expensive and time-consuming.

If you know you are unable to manage such a high maintenance color, it’s better to try ombre or balayage.

Types of hair color

There are three types of hair color:

Semi-permanent hair color: This does not contain peroxide so it cannot lift the hair, therefore it can only make the hair darker and not lighter. The color is deposited on the outermost layer of the hair so it will only last about six to twelve shampoos. It will enhance the shine and condition of the hair. For a first-timer, this is probably the color to go for, especially if you’re uncertain whether you will like the color or not.

Demi-Permanent hair color: This deposits the color between the cuticle and cortex, making it last longer, anywhere from 12 – 26 washes. It contains low amounts of peroxide so unlike semi-permanent, can lighten the hair slightly.

Permanent hair color: This hair color will last until the colored strands grow out. Permanent hair color can light hair up to 4 levels. Anything more than that is not recommended as it can cause damage to the hair. If you have more than 50% gray hair, you should go for permanent hair color.

How to care for colored hair

While freshly colored locks can make you feel like a million bucks, the damage that dyeing often causes is not so enjoyable! Dryness, split ends, brassiness are common for ladies who color their hair often but these problems can be avoided and treated.

Whether you’ve chosen a permanent dye, subtle balayage or simple highlights, your hair requires a little extra care and attention – not just for the color to last longer but for the hair to stay healthy and vibrant. Here are 10 hair care tips for you:

1. Keep your hair hydrated with deep conditioning and hot oil treatments before coloring.

2. Wait 72 hours to shampoo after coloring. To keep the new color vibrant, it’s best to wait.

3. Use a color-care specific shampoo and conditioner that’s alcohol and sulfate-free.

4. Avoid washing every day – shampoo strips the color.

5. Wash your hair with lukewarm or cold water – hot water fades color and dries the hair.

6. Use purple shampoo, if your color needs a pick-me-up and you can’t make it to the salon.

7. Follow a clean, healthy diet with plenty of fluids and foods that are rich in iron & vitamin A.

8. Reduce the use of curling irons, blow dryers, straighteners. Colored hair is vulnerable to heat.

9. Incorporate hair masks in your hair care.

10. Avoid exposure to chlorine and UV rays – take special precautions when swimming or going out in the sun.
