Does oiling scalp and hair help to get lustrous hair?
Although the method of applying and usage of oil has evolved, oiling for long and strong hair is still followed from ancient times. For centuries, it has been the most effective treatment for hair problems. Hair loss, split ends, frizz, dullness, thinning and graying hair, all have one single solution – Oiling.
Today, modern science and research have confirmed many of the ‘believed’ benefits of hair & scalp oiling. Regular oil massages have several proven direct and indirect benefits for the scalp and hair, including increased circulation, deep conditioning, relaxation, decreased stress, and more.
Benefits of oiling scalp and hair
Adds luster and shine: Hair is naturally hydrophobic, repelling water with natural oils produced in the scalp. However, weather changes, heat tools, pollution, chlorinated water, chemical products, etc. can make hair dry, coarse and dehydrated. Hair oils such as coconut, argan, almond, olive oil and castor oil which are rich in Vitamin E will coat the hair shafts and form a protective layer that makes the hair smooth, hydrated and glossy.
Strengthens hair: By oiling the hair, it will help to increase the tensile strength of the hair, reduce the fizziness and prevents breakage, as well as strengthen weak hair caused by poor diet, cold temperatures, and heat from styling tools. Losing around 100 hairs per day is normal but if hair fall exceeds that, regular oil massages can certainly help, as oil massages unclog the pores on the scalp and boost circulation, promoting root health and hair growth.
Boosts hair growth: Oiling the hair can also act as a replenishing agent and provide needed nourishment and nutrients. Natural oils enriched with herbs are known to reduce hair fall and also regenerate hair. However, beyond the product itself, oil massage has several benefits. It stimulates blood circulation which brings nutrients to the scalp and also works as a stress buster – relieving tension which is one of the causes of hair fall.
Prevent infections & dandruff: When pores on the scalp clog, it leads to irritation, fungal or bacterial infections and dandruff. Regular oil massage nourishes the hair and helps oil glands produce sufficient natural oil. Oil with anti-bacterial ingredients like honey or lemon can help to keep infections and dandruff at bay. However, too much oil can also clog the pores on the scalp, so be sure to wash with a mild shampoo.
Relaxes body & mind: A warm oil scalp massage will soothe your nerves, increase blood circulation, reduce stress, enhance your mood and relax body, mind and soul.
Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy oil will enhance your experience, as well as provide the essential oils that can improve the similar hair conditions such as hair loss, dryness, dandruff and any kind of inflammation. By adding massage and facial enhancers such as our unwinding scalp massage or aromatherapy to any of your spa treatments would be an added bonus to your next appointment.
Oiling.Shampooing.Conditioning. the three most important cornerstones of hair care. And it all starts with OILING.
Some dos and don’ts of hair massage
Do use warm (never hot) oil rather than cold oil. The warmth aids blood circulation and nutrient absorption.
Do consider dabbing on oil on the scalp with a cotton swab, it’s gentler.
Do remover knots and tangles from your hair before applying oil, otherwise you’ll end up with more knots which will cause breakage.
Do give your scalp and hair time to absorb the oil. Wait at least 30 minutes before shampooing.
Do not use your finger nails when massaging the scalp. Use stroking and circular movements of the fingertips.
Do not dump the oil on your head. Gently section off your hair and apply small quantities of oil on the scalp.
Do not tie your hair tightly after a massage. Hair roots tend to loosen a bit after a massage and tying tightly can lead to hair fall.
Do not overdo the oil applications. Twice a week at the most. Regular oiling is essential for maximum benefits but too often can harm your hair.
