Cues to beauty for Skin of Color

Skin of color is distinct in its structure and function and the demographics continue to grow along with the growing need for an assortment of products and treatments that meet the needs of a multicultural market for skin care.

The most important factor in caring for skin of color is understanding how it uniquely functions and ensuring skin conditions are correctly diagnosed. Skin disorders look different on darker skin types and require your skin care expert to recognize potential differences in skin responses, therapeutic limitations and appreciate a client’s concern.

It is more than defining normal, oily, or dry skin: sensitive skin versus normal skin: or aging skin versus younger skin. Women and men of color experience distinctive issues related to their skin.  The most apparent difference in individuals of color involves pigmentation and is the number one reason our clients with skin of color come to us for treatment.  Hyper-pigmentation appears as various sized light brown to black skin patches on the skin, caused when there is an overproduction of the skin’s melanin. This is usually a result of sun exposure, but can also be caused by skin injury such as that caused by picking at one’s skin and acne. Protecting your skin from sun damage with a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ should be a part of your daily routine regardless of your skin type!

In addition some of the more common issues associated with skin of color are: unwanted hair, de-hydration and acne.  However, it’s important to know that some technologies are off limits for these clients due to unwanted side effects and efficacy issues.

Consultation is key!  A critical part of treating any skin condition is the consultation process prior to any professional treatment.  A client’s hereditary background will provide a solid understanding of specific characteristics of skin of color and blended-heritage clients, and will allow for appropriate choices for treatments and provide outstanding outcomes for clients.

Treatments that work excellently for skin of color are:

Peels

Peels are a great way to treat skin issues such as anti-aging, pigmentation and acne; however we only recommend superficial peels that are blended specific for darker skin tones due to possible skin discoloration.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a safe technique to treat dermatologic conditions in darker skin and is rapidly becoming one of the most popular skin treatments because it offers a wide variety of benefits that is non-surgical and non-invasive, and offers a quick recovery.

Medical micro-needling stimulates the production of collagen in the skin. This medical grade treatment will not only improve the skin’s appearance, but can also be used to treat hyper-pigmentation, stretch marks, acne scars and fine lines, wrinkles and provide an overall healthier more youthful appearance of the skin.

Radiofrequency

For people with dark skin tones, radiofrequency when combined with microneedling offers the best of both worlds: maximum collagen and elastin renewal in the treatment area with minimal injury to the surface of the skin. Results can include diminishing many forms of hyper-pigmentation to restore an even skin tone.

Sublative

Unlike ablative treatments, which use lasers to treat the top layers of skin, sublative rejuvenation leaves the skin intact and directs energy into the dermis, greatly reducing the chances of discoloration following treatments. eMatrix™ can be a great alternative to laser treatments for patients with dark skin. Excellent for anti-aging, scars, tone and wrinkles.

Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Lasers were a no-no for darker skin for a long time. The main disconnect was that lasers did not properly distinguish hair follicles and skin pigment, so those with darker skin could run the risk of burns and discoloration.
