Caring for dry hands, in the time of COVID-19

People everywhere are washing their hands now more than ever due to COVID-19 and unfortunately, it can have a direct impact on the overall health of your skin. You have probably noticed that your hands are becoming exceptionally dry and some may have even noticed a red rash-like appearance.

Although not uncommon, dry hands can also be caused by environmental influences such as dry air from constant exposure to air conditioning. Some other causes of dry hands are dehydration, medical conditions and genetics.

Dehydration

It’s important to remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep ourselves hydrated. This will help in keeping our skin soft and supple.

Medical Conditions

Underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, lupus, psoriasis, eczema or an underactive thyroid all can contribute to dry cracked hands that sometimes even peel.

Genetics

Research has found that dry skin can be hereditary.  Some people have a weaker skin barrier and are more likely to develop dry flakey skin.

If you suffer from any of these, here are some helpful suggestions:

Moisturizers

After every hand wash, it’s important to use a good hand moisturizer to help to restore the natural moisture to your skin. Look for products with a high percentage of occlusives and emollients such as shea butter, argan oil, glycerin, grapeseed oil, castor oil, olive oil, jojoba, petrolatum (a.k.a. petroleum jelly). Coconut oil is also a great moisturizer.

Sun Exposure

Overexposure to the sun can seriously dry out your skin. Always protect your hands with sunblock.

Deep Skin Treatments

Hand creams and moisturizers will keep the surface of the skin smooth and healthy but try an overnight treatment.  Apply a liberal amount of moisturizer and put on gloves before you go to sleep.  This will keep the moisturizer in direct contact with your skin overnight allowing it to be absorbed overnight.

Gloves

When washing dishes, cleaning or gardening with soap, household cleaners and outdoor chemicals, be sure to always wear rubber gloves to help protect your hands.
