Laser Hair Removal & Skin Type: What You Should Know

Laser Hair Removal & Skin Type: What You Should Know

Your skin tone and hair color both affect how laser hair removal should be planned. A professional consultation helps determine which wavelength and settings are appropriate for your individual characteristics.

Understanding the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale

The Fitzpatrick scale describes how skin tends to respond to ultraviolet exposure, from very fair skin (Type I) to deeply pigmented skin (Type VI). It can be useful in laser treatment planning, but it is only one part of the assessment. Hair color, recent sun exposure, treatment area and individual history also matter.

Why Wavelength Matters

Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair. Because skin also contains pigment, the wavelength and settings need to be selected carefully for the individual.

Alexandrite 755 nm

Alexandrite technology is commonly used for appropriate lighter skin tones, particularly when there is strong contrast between darker hair and surrounding skin.

Nd:YAG 1064 nm

Nd:YAG technology has a longer wavelength and is commonly used when treating darker skin tones because it interacts differently with skin pigment.

Where GentleMax Pro® Fits In

Sanctuary Salon & Med Spa uses GentleMax Pro®, which combines Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths in one platform. This gives trained providers options when planning treatment for a range of skin tones and hair characteristics.

Can Every Hair Color Be Treated the Same Way?

No. Laser hair removal relies on pigment in the hair. Very light blonde, gray, white and some red hair may respond differently because there may be less pigment for the laser to target.

What About Tanned Skin?

Recent tanning or significant sun exposure can affect treatment planning. Tell your provider about recent sun exposure or changes in skin tone before treatment so they can determine whether the appointment should proceed.

Does Laser Hair Removal Change Skin Texture?

Laser hair removal is intended to reduce unwanted hair, not to change skin texture. Some clients may notice fewer shaving-related bumps or ingrown hairs as hair growth is reduced, but individual skin response varies.
